| Three issues that continue to impact the residents of District 6 and Kansans across the state are high property taxes, healthcare shortcomings, and the need for exceptional educational opportunities. Property tax relief continues to be a number one issue that is discussed when speaking with home owners. Our legislators should be open to alternative solutions and work collaboratively to bring tax relief to all, while fostering economic growth opportunities and affordable housing that is inviting to new residents. This is attainable if taxes are applied proportionately and the wealthiest were not able to take advantage of loop holes not afforded to other earning levels. Improving the quality of life for our residents by minimizing healthcare shortcomings is a must. There are over 50 hospitals currently in jeopardy of having to close, which will create further hardship to our rural communities. So many of our neighbors continue to be at a disadvantage because they do not have adequate medical and mental healthcare and are forced to rely on pharmaceuticals for treatment and pain relief when there are alternative options. The expansion of Medicaid would serve over 150,000 neighbors across the state (440 in Miami County alone.) It would provide coverage to those that fall into a gap, such as young people who fall off of their parents� coverage that can�t afford to get their own, Veterans who have a gap of services provided by their VA benefits, and would lower premium rates for individuals with insurance as insurance companies would not have to recoup expenses of caring for the uninsured from the insured. Kansas has lost out on over 6 billion dollars that our taxpayers have already paid by not passing the expansion of Medicaid. We have also lost out on millions by not legalizing medical cannabis which could be applied to funding our school. Fully funding public school education and special education programs that would incorporate instructional staff specifically trained to assist children with ADHD. It�s imperative that our children acquire the skills that they need to live prosperous lives upon graduation, no matter if they decide to continue their education or pursue a critical trade that is needed for our everyday lives. After all, our children are our future and it's time to move forward on a path that will afford them opportunities for lifetimes to come. |
